  Why Say It

Québec/Canada 2006, MiniDV, col., 1:38, French o.v. s.-t. E. sc. Hélène Duchesneau, act. Sylvie Legault, Sébastien Dhavernas, Jacques Drolet, Graziella Mossa.

A micro-budget personal movie, based on improvisation by nineteen actors.

The film stimulates reflexion and discussions on the midlife crisis.

What pushes a forty year old man to have a romance with a young woman? Who lies? Who says the truth? Maria (Graziella Mossa) seeks these answers by making a documentary on the subject. Her best friend, Genevieve (Sylvie Legault), artist-painter, is confronted with the evasive answers of her husband, Pierrre (Jacques Drolet), a researcher who studies the effect of hormones on communication. During a supper of four, Pierre says he understands his fellow workers who left their wives for a girl. This answer will not cease to cause more questions, worries and anguishes.

Helene Duchesneau, who studied with Jerzy Grotowski, uses the truth emerging from the play acting as the basis of her cinematographic approach. For this first film, she used a MiniDV format and a non obtrusive camera.

The film efficiently mixes real and fictitious testimonies as well as settings improvised by talented actors: Sylvie Legault, Sébastien Dhavernas, Jacques Drolet and Graziella Mossa. Let’s note also the appearances of Claire Gagnon, Alain Zouvy, Grégory Hlady, Danielle Proulx, France Arbour and Frédérique de Passillé. Marie-Noël Mainguy and Denis Sénéchal also bring smiles, emotions and truth with their touching interpretation of a blooming new couple.
