The MiniDV Camera

In my approach, it was important, even essential, for the technique to serve the actor and not the opposite. In my understanding, it is natural to leave all the room for the actor, to respect his space in order to let him have all the necessary freedom to express his emotions, his truth, especially in regard to the specific form of this shooting, mainly developed around improvisations.

It’s in that sense that we tried to explore all the capabilities of the MiniDV. The first property of this small tool is above all its near invisibility. Therefore, it promotes intimacy between the actors. Moreover, the image definition is much more effective in the close-ups. Discretion and close-ups are two essential elements that made it possible, for the director, to examine with the scrutiny of a magnifying glass, the actor’s moments of truth.

At the beginning, there was several brain storming meetings with the actors. That is how I elaborated the scene by scene. Then I made several experiments with the camera, in order to verify if what I wanted to favour was applicable. Finally, before continuing the shooting, we proceeded with a transfer from numerical to 35mm, a two minute extract (available for viewing) which was pretty convincing and determinant for the continuation of the project.
